Joel is JSW Financial's founder and chairman.
Joel believes in providing unparalleled access to specific expertise and capabilities needed to help individuals and families achieve their life goals.
He is a southern Louisiana native who was taught the value of family, finances and hard work as part of his rural Cajun heritage. His desire for knowledge and experience led him to obtain economic degrees from Louisiana State and Purdue along with a doctorate in economics from the University of Florida. He’s also a graduate of the Certified Investment Management Analyst program at the prestigious Wharton School.
An avid bow hunter, Joel admits that his outdoor passion mirrors the patience, experience, knowledge, and research that have been at the hallmark of his firm’s long-term success.
Joel’s passion for teaching others was first recognized as a professor at Virginia Tech, where he taught economics and consulted with agribusiness firms on financial management. He taught courses in small-business management and business start-up. He conducted research on market pricing strategies for Virginia dairy farmers and taught the Certified Financial Planner course at Virginia Tech. His entrepreneurial spirit has led him to own and operate seven retail electronics franchises in four states.
Joel’s community involvement includes co-founding the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance, the Estate Planning Council of the New River Valley and the Community Foundation of the New River Valley.
Joel is a member of InKnowVision, Advisors in Philanthropy and The American Numismatic Association. He is a contributing author of the book Wealth: Enhancement and Preservation. He is also co-author of The Complete Guide to Estate & Financial Planning in Turbulent Times and Being in Business is a Funny Thing - Getting Out is Another.
He is married to his wife, BJ, is the proud father of two engineers, Sarah and Emily, and is a proud grandfather to Emerson.
Mike is the president of JSW Financial. In addition to his role as a Certified Financial PlannerTM to assist clients in all aspects of financial planning and investment strategies, Mike is responsible for day-to-day operations at JSW.
He also conducts research on existing and prospective investment strategies and programs, including alternative investments and absolute strategies. He holds Series 7 and 66 Securities Registrations and Virginia life and health insurance licenses. Before becoming a financial advisor, Mike held various engineering and management positions with multiple large manufacturing corporations.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and an MBA from Purdue University’s Krannert School of Business.
Mike and his wife, Chrystal, have been blessed with 3 lovely daughters.
David is a financial consultant and assists clients with customized investment strategies. David holds Series 7, 8, and 65 Securities Registrations and Virginia life & health insurance licenses.
David has extensive experience with stocks, mutual funds, annuities, and managed money.
Prior to joining JSW, David spent 20 years as a financial investment advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors, serving nine of those years as branch manager. Previously, he served as director of accounting for Roanoke Hospital Association, now Carilion Clinic, and worked with a CPA firm.
David has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and serves on the board of the New River Valley Estate Planning Council. David and his wife, Mary, are natives of Blacksburg. They have two sons, James and Ben.
Sara Bohn, CFP®, CLU®, CLTC, MBA
Sara's areas of expertise include insurance, investments, educational, retirement, wealth and inherited estate strategies, asset management, and business retirement accounts management as well as succession strategies and employee and executive benefits. She holds Series 6,7 and 63 Securities Registrations and Virginia life and health insurance licenses.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She serves on the board of directors of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and on the Community Investment Committee for the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd. She is active with the Boy Scouts of America and is a member of the New River Valley Estate Planning Council.
Sara and her husband, Jan Helge, a Virginia Tech engineering professor, have two sons.
Robin is a Registered Para-PlannerTM with more than 12 years of experience in financial operations. Her industry expertise – account maintenance and production reporting – enables JSW to respond to a variety of client requests with speed and precision.
Her knowledge and problem-solving abilities have proven invaluable assets to provide superior service to our clients. In addition, she has several specialties that have increased the dimension and scope of her service. Robin holds the Series 7 Securities Registration and Virginia life and health insurance licenses. Prior to joining JSW, Robin worked at Fidelity Investments and Valley Bank. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Dallas Baptist University.
Robin and her husband, Aaron, have a son, Jude.
Beth is often the first voice you hear when you call JSW. Her duties include scheduling client appointments and reviews, scheduling our team for continuing education, managing our office, and overseeing special projects, including client appreciation events.
Beth's 15 years of experience as director of administration and a variety of similar leadership positions with the Free Clinic, and other non-profit organizations helped to fine-tune the executive, management and organizational skills she brings to JSW.
Beth holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and minor in sociology from Virginia Tech.
Beth and her husband, Harley, are the proud parents of a blended family of five girls, Wendy, Cindy, Kelly, Lauren and Megan.
Bethany is the newest member of the JSW team. She works as the Client Services Specialist, an assistant to Robin Hoback, as well as aids in daily office operations.
Bethany has had various job experiences; ranging from customer service, to banking, but most recently she held a job working as the Administrative Assistant to the General Manager of a retail property. She looks forward to using her skills in customer relations to continue to provide the excellent service you have come to expect from JSW.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Virginia Tech.
Bethany and her husband, Ben, have a son, Gabriel.
